International Association of Jesuit Universities (IAJU) Conference at the University of Deusto, Spain

Assembly of the International Association of Jesuit Universities (IAJU) 2018

The Assembly of the International Association of Jesuit Universities (IAJU) 2018 from the 9th to the 12th of July was attended by more than 300 rectors and leaders of the main Jesuit universities and colleges of the world and 21 of them are representing AJCU-AP. It was hosted by Deusto University, Bilbao, Spain. After the IAJU assembly, on the 13th of July the AJCU-AP delegates organized a conference in the same venue.

It was chaired by the Fr. General of the Society of Jesus, Arturo Sosa SJ, with the motto: “Transforming Our World Together”. The event features keynote speakers, such as Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi, Cardinal Giuseppe Versaldi, Pankaj Mishra and Gaël Giraud SJ. During the meeting resolutions for the new governing board of IAJU was discussed and new possibilities for collaboration between universities, regional networks and the international association itself were analysed. There were also be moments of great symbolic significance, such as the signing and constitution of the new IAJU network in the Loyola Sanctuary.

The important documents such as, the keynote address from Fr. During the assembly two conversations were alloted for the AJCU-AP delegates to discuss the IAJU Charter and its priorities. The input and feedback for the Charter was presented by the CEO of AJCU-AP together with the representatives from other regions on the last day of the assembly. AJCU-AP delegates also voted for two representatives, Johanes Eka Priyatma and Fr. Jose Ramon T. Villarin to become the representatives in IAJU. On day 3, all AJCU-AP delegates had a 45 minutes conversation with The Father General Arturo Sosa before celebrating mass at Basilica of Loiola. The closing mass at the Gothic Chappel of Deusto and dinner at Deusto University concluded the assembly. Library Training for Instituto São João de Brito Staff at Sanata Dharma University Library

Monday (14/5), a representative from Instituto São João de Brito, East Timor, started his first training at Sanata Dharma University library. This training is one of the cooperation between Sanata Dharma University and Instituto São João de Brito where both are in the AJCU-AP (Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities in Asia Pacific).

The training was represented by Mr. Castilo Atino S. Viera as library staff of Instituto São João de Brito and organized by the Bureau of Cooperation and International Relations (BKHI). Before starting the training, Mr. Castilo Atino S. Viera was welcomed by the Rector of USD Johanes Eka Priyatma, M.Sc., Ph.D. and the Head of Sanata Dharma University Library Drs. Paul Suparmo, S.S., M. Hum. Then, the training begins with material delivery from the USD library.

The training will be held for 2 weeks starting from 14th – 25th May 2018. The materials for this training are library management and policy of library, collection development, processing, library automation / computerization using SliMS application, library service, and preservation of library collection. This training material adapts to the needs of Instituto São João de Brito because this institution officially opened in 2016 so it still needs lots of development in terms of education and other fields.

Sanata Dharma University hopes that once the training is completed, representatives from Instituto São João de Brito can return to their institution of origin and apply what has been obtained at Sanata Dharma University related to library management and hope that with this training, the cooperation between Sanata Dharma University and Instituto São João de Brito will continue to grow both in education and in other fields. AJCU-AP Sustainability of Life Project

As a continuation of the JCAP Conference on Sustainability in 2016, the AJCU-AP Sustainability of Life Project was held at Sanata Dharma University from March 7, 2018 to March 9, 2018 in which the main concern is being environmentally friendly not only on campus, but also in society. Representatives from Ateneo de Manila (Philippines), Ateneo de Davao (Philippines), Xavier University (Philippines), Instituto São João de Brito (East Timor), Politeknik ATMI Surakarta (Indonesia), and Sanata Dharma University (Indonesia) participated in this project.

This meeting was moderated by Benny Hari Juliawan, SJ. The first day of the meeting was opened by an introduction by SDU Rector, Johanes Eka Priyatma, M.Sc., Ph.D., explaining the result of the previous JCAP Conference in 2016 which was based on several concerns, and how it is expected that this will be a collaborative project which will be able to impact a wider audience to promote sustainable lifestyles. Then, each university presented their environmental concerns which are happening on and off campus. There were numerous concerns faced by the different countries regarding the environment’s situations, which included rivers, dry land, wastes, natural disaster impacts, and so on.

What realizations are able to be done in order to fulfill the goals of this project were discussed on the second day. The participants were teamed up to focus on a targeted audience assigned for each team to discuss what are the appropriate actions to take. Finally, after the groups ideas were presented thoroughly about the programs, Ms. Carmela Marie M. Santos-Belisario from Ateneo de Davao University was appointed as a coordinator for this project. The last day was closed by sightseeing the city of Yogyakarta.

Consortium of Jesuit Education School/Faculties

The Asia Pacific Jesuit Education Consortium

As one of the Jesuit universities, Sanata Dharma University hosted the Asia Pacific Jesuit Education Consortium. Participated in by 10 Jesuit institutions from 6 different countries in Asia Pacific, the consortium was held on 30-31 October 2017 at Kadarman Room, Sanata Dharma University. The institutions who participated in the consortium were Instituto de Britto (East Timor), Sophia University (Japan), St. Aloysius Gonzaga English Language Institute (Myanmar), Ateneo de Davao University (Philippines), Ateneo de Manila University (Philippines), Ateneo de Naga University (Philippines), Ateneo de Zamboanga University (Philippines), Xavier University (Philippines), Xavier Learning Community (Thailand), and Sanata Dharma University. The Presidents of Asia Pacific University and College Meeting in Thailand

The Presidents of Asia Pacific Universities and Colleges Meeting was held in Chiang Rai, Thailand at XLC (Xavier Learning Community). The meeting was held for two days on the 18th and 19th of August 2017.

There were 32 delegates from each university and college who are the members of AJCU-AP (The Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities in Asia Pacific). They are the delegates from Indonesia, Japan, Philippines, Korea, China, Thailand, and Australia. International Charity Concert 2016

Held in the Driyarkara Auditorium of Sanata Dharma University, the International Charity Concert 2016 was successfully conducted. This concert was one of the highlighted events that were part of the celebration of the 61th Dies Natalis of Sanata Dharma University. In conducting the concert, the participation of the audiences in watching the concert was also required. Keynote address of Fr. Mark Raper, SJ at the annual AJCU-AP Presidents’ Assembly

With the changing landscape both of the Jesuits and of Asia Pacific societies, and the diversity of our educational conditions, languages, cultures, religions and local struggles, how can our institutions of higher learning cooperate to make an effective contribution to the one, global Jesuit mission?  I have been asked to speak to this desire for greater collaboration among us in the context of General Congregation 36.

Mission and Governance
How we understand our mission should decide how we organise ourselves. The Jesuit mission is to serve the ‘Missio Dei’.  This mission is clearly given in the Formula of the Institute, the final version of which dates back to 1550.
